The town
Alexandreia or Alexandria is a town in the Imathia regional unit of Macedonia, Greece. It’s a rapidly developing town focusing on boosting its economy via agriculture, merchandising, alternative tourism and other alternative actions.
Alexandreia is a located in the vast plain north of the river Aliakmonas and west of the river Axios, also named as Kampania or Roumlouki. The area around Alexandreia has the greatest production of peaches in Greece and apples, pears, tobacco, and cotton are also grown at large.
Alexandreia is 19 km south of Giannitsa, 23 km northeast of Veroia and 42 km west of Thessaloniki and 27 km northeast from Vergina.
There are many fundamental public services in the city, including a health center, serving its residents. There is also a large market with numerous hotels ,retail shops, supermarkets, cafeterias, pubs and taverns.
Place to Visit
St. Nikolaos church – Axios – Loudias Delta
It is easy to reach the estuary of the Loudias, an asphalt road takes you there from the junction at Klidi on the highway. Many amateur fishermen set out from here to fish for bass, sole or mullet. Pause to check out the mussel farmer’s huts on the opposite side of the river, and keep an eye out for Dalmatian pelicans which often feed here. Flamingos, mallards and pygmy cormorants are very common here in winter time. Be sure not to miss the mussel farms with the poles and the nets full of mussels hanging on them in the sea. Gulls and cormorants like to rest here too.
On reaching the sea you will see the little church of Saint Nikolaos and just beyond that you`ll encounter the wooden huts of the mussel growers. These constructions serve for work, rest and tool storage. This area is the main source of mussels in Greece. You can watch fishermen and the mussel growers working, using the tools of their trade, but don`t miss seeing cormorants and pygmy cormorants- the real “professionals” at work, fishing under water or drying their wings in the sun.
With the city of Thessaloniki on your left, continue your trip on the coastal road up to the wooden observation tower, from where you can enjoy the view to the Axios Delta.
Aigai – The royal capital of Macedonia
Vergina is located 8 km southeast of the city of Veroia and 30 km from Alexandria. There is a frequent public transport connection between Vergina and Veroia. Veroia is frequently and regularly connected to Thessaloniki by road and rail, and also directly connected to Athens.
The royal burials unearthed in the rich necropolis of Aigai attest to the city’s prosperity. During the reign of Alexander I (498-454 BC), Aigai became the centre of the most significant Greek state in the north. During Archelaus reign (413-399 BC), the court of Aigai was turned into a hospitable heaven for great artists that would grace with their presence the city life
In 1977, Manolis Andronikos excavated the site, gave it back its name and the history of Macedonia began to be rewritten.
How to reach us
Alexandreia has a railway station on the railway from Thessaloniki to Florina. The Platy railway station on the important railway from Thessaloniki to Athens is also situated in the municipality of Alexandreia. The motorways A2 (Egnatia Odos) and A1 pass through the municipality. The Greek National Roads EO1 and EO4 pass through the town.
Festival Venues
The 12th edition of the festival offers a unique cultural journey. With the Spiritual and Cultural Center of Alexandria at its heart, the festival also builds bridges of culture with neighboring Veria through an open-air screening under the stars at the CINE STAR summer cinema. It evokes memories of ancient civilization at the Royal Tombs of Aigai, before concluding at CAFÉ STATHMOS, next to the railway line that connects our city with the Balkans.
